Abandon the planet?

The brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking is suggesting that we may have less than a 100 years to survive on this planet. He cites numerous factors like self-destructing behavior such as nuclear or biological warfare. At the heart of his observations, there seems to be the focus of insuring the survival of the human species. Interesting article. I find it fascinating that one of the most respected physicist's is suggesting such a mission.

As the author Alan Boyle writes, "Considering all the trouble that NASA has been having with human spaceflight lately, how much do you think we can get done by 2110?"

Shawn,

This excerpt echoes your sermon from Sunday about man's innate nature.

A good read! :)

Thanks,

I find it interesting that Hawking, who believes humans are responsible for the destruction of one planet, would suggest colonizing space. He believes we are responsible, due to our "selfish and aggressive genetic code", then what makes him think we would not continue to pass along our destructive ways even further out into space.

I am sure he believes in evolution, and surmises that we are perhaps "the only intelligent beings in the galaxy", so I would ask him, why does he think this "selfish genetic code" has not evolved out of us yet.

Secondly, I would like to ask him, if evolution was true, then why not accept the fact perhaps we are destined to go extinct? After all, evolution is not about the improvement of the human race, but ultimately about the universe improving - what makes those who believe in evolution think that humans are supposed to always be a part of the universe's improvement? Especially if they believe we are so destructive!

I don't believe in evolution, but would love to use an evolutionist's theory to make them think about how they could be wrong.
